    Description

Unfortunately the pictures don't do this piece justice. This is an stunning example of the US Army Officers grade M1881 Helmet plate. Higher relief details, fire gilding with gold plate and then burnished. Separately applied shield and rifles with a number 2 affixed. Much rarer than enlisted examples. I have had this for a number of years and it is original to the 1880's period. Framed and ready to hang on the wall. I have not removed it to see what attachments are intact. The 2nd Infantry saw significant action on the frontier. From Wikipedia: "
From 1877 to 1886 the regiment was in Washington, Oregon and Idaho Territory campaigning against the Nez Perce, then the Bannocks and then a band of the
    Eastern Shoshones
    called the
    Sheepeaters
. In 1886 it moved to
    Fort Omaha
, Nebraska to help fight the
    Sioux
. The 2nd Infantry was on the
    Pine Ridge Reservation
on 29 December 1890 when the
    Wounded Knee Massacre
occurred and, although the regiment was not involved, one officer from the regiment was wounded there. The regiment remained on the western plains until 1898" Great piece from the Indian wars. Thanks for looking!
