    Description

    German Captured French Model 1866 Rifle Bayonet with Scabbard.  Bayonet measures 27.5" overall with a blade length of 22.5", with inside socket diameter measuring .720".  Mutzig Arsenal 1868 on spine, has regimental marks on cross-guard and scabbard., "87.L.I.1.5" opposite side marked, "12", the scabbard is marked, "70.L.I./3.29"+ "2709" inverted above the reg. markings. Pommel end marked, "18". The frog stud has been modified by Germany, long tear drop style.  Great working press-stud ejector.  Blade and scabbard shows age patina, wear, use, some scattered rust, blade edge 8" from the point shows a ding/chip or blunted.  Point end is slightly blunted, you can feel it more than see it in photos. Scabbard does not lock with bayonet, can slide out.
    Following the Franco Prussian War, a lot of these bayonets were taken as war reparations by the Germans.  During WWI, many variations were made of this piece.  Some were converted to fit the the old model Prussian carbine.  See photos for further details, clarification, and condition.
