Miller with low serial number – 843 – on the rim. This Medal was presented to Brigadier General Samuel W. Miller. Miller graduated from West Point in 1879 and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th U. S. Infantry on June 13, 1879. He served Frontier Duty at Ft. Keogh, Montana and Scouting Duty October 9, 1879 to April 14, 1882 seeing action against the Sioux March 8, 1880 and April 15-22, 1881. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action against the Sioux. From April to September 1882 he served at Camp Popular River, Montana athen again at Fort Keogh to May 30, 1888 where he saw action against the Crow. In 1885 he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in 1893 and Major in 1902 serving with the 46th US Vol. Inf in the Philippines. As a member of the 19th US Infantry, Miller served as Commandant School of Musketry from 1911-1914. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1917. General Miller served for 41 years in the United States Infantry and had a long and storied career. He died in 1940 at Washington, D.C. at the age of 83.
This original, Indian Wars Service Medal is made up of 3 elements and measures approx. 2 5/8" long overall and 1 3/8" at its widest. The bar pin at the top is cast of bronze and retains its original pin back. Hanging from the pin is a red silk ribbon with two vertical black stripes and attached to the bottom of the ribbon is a heavy Bronze Medal measuring approx. 1 3/8” (33 mm) in diameter.
The obverse of the Bronze Medal features an image of a Native American Indian Warrior on horseback carrying a lance. Text above reads simply “Indian Wars”. At 6 o’clock at the edge of the obverse there is a Buffalo scull flanked by arms of a wreath. The reverse features a spread wing eagle perched atop crossed military arms and flags. Text above reads “United States Army” and text below reads “For Service”. There are also 13 stars on the reverse. The rim of the Medal carries the stamped serial number “843”. Although this is an early serial number, the ribbon is of the later design and we believe that this was likely a replacement Medal issued to General Miller for some reason at a later date.
The Indian Campaign Medal (more commonly known as The Indian Wars Medal) is a decoration established by War Department General Orders 12, 1907. The medal was retroactively awarded to any soldier still enlisted in the U.S. Army and on active duty in 1907, who had participated in the American Indian Wars against the Native Americans between 1865 and 1891. As the award was for service that had occurred many years prior to 1907 less then 2,000 original Indian Wars Medals (U.S. Mint number on the rim) were actually awarded. In 1917 the design on the ribbon was changed from solid red to red with two black stripes. Interestingly, the Medal offered has a low serial number yet a ca1917 ribbon that appears to be original to it.
